How it's calculated
The recommendation follows IOM guidelines (Institute of Medicine): total gain is set by your pre-pregnancy BMI โ underweight 12.5-18 kg, normal 11.5-16, overweight 7-11.5, obese 5-9. The gain-so-far is computed from the recommended rate at your current pregnancy week.

How much weight should I gain in pregnancy?
It depends on pre-pregnancy BMI: normal weight 11.5-16 kg for the whole pregnancy, overweight 7-11.5 kg. The calculator gives your range.
How much per trimester?
The first trimester is usually just 0.5-2 kg, then about 0.4 kg per week in the second and third trimesters (for normal weight).
What if I gained more or less?
Some variation is normal. If concerned, consult your doctor. Don't diet during pregnancy without medical supervision.
